Contemporary manufacturers offer a choice of large variety of molding of different color shades and styles united in lines and different by dozens of other characteristics.
The first prior characteristic is production material. Traditionally molding is manufactured from wood. But not any wood, but the one having necessary density, structure and not vulnerable to deformation. Suitable material is cedar, yew, African аюс, Indonesian рамп, and pine wood.
Italy is the absolute leader among molding manufacturers. By the way, very often Italian factories use as their raw materials our Russian pine wood that undergoes preliminary special processing. There are also good offers of molding made from polystyrene plastics, which are widely used for framing of bathroom mirrors and mirrors installed in rooms with unstable temperature and increased humidity.
Molding from metal is traditionally highly demanded by various companies, to be used for framing in offices and shops and other places of sales. Variety of color range allows finding the necessary combination for framing of graphics, posters, photographs, certificates and award diplomas. Cold emotionless outward look of molding perfectly fits business atmosphere. But in case of a meeting room interior design or a boss’ room, the preference is given to the old, kind wood molding.
Thus, for example, a geographical map in expensive interior demands relevant framing, to underline the style, taste and preferences of the one who put it on the wall. Before inviting our designer-consultant to visit you with samples, first of all you have to decide on what particularly you are interested in terms of further choice of molding style. If you have taken decision only on the color and texture of needed molding, this might be not enough for making the final choice.
It is good to know that there exist terms characterizing molding cross-sectional size, such as: profile, width, height and четверть. (See the picture)

Passepartout
Passepartout – is a thick cardboard sheet with a cut-in «window» in the middle, which shades and emphasizes the framed artwork, making the image deeper. Passepartout has a very vast color range and is of different texture and surface: silk, velvet, decorative films.
The sheet standard thickness is 1.5 mm. Several passepartout sheets of different thickness and size can be used for one frame, with the aim to reach larger scope of the framed piece of artwork.
When choosing passepartout width for a picture – the top right and left fields should be smaller than the bottom field. As a rule, passepartout fields size should be larger than the width of the chosen molding. Oil paintings are not supposed to be framed in passepartout.
Usually passepartout is used in combination with glass, this is why it is ideal for framing graphic artworks, posters, photographs, diplomas, as well as for framing of objects – clocks, medals, old weapons, jewellery, and other items having volume.
In contrast to artworks made on canvas, tapestry, embroidery and other artworks based on fabrics are subject to proportions deformation. This creates certain difficulties in terms measurements related to further correction of fabric stretching on a frame and demands particular skills and professionalism of designer-consultant.
Embroidery or tapestry of small size can be fixed on pressure-sensitive foamy cardboard. Presence of passepartout in framing such works will add the depth and will provide for necessary gap to avoid undesirable contact between the fabric base and the glass covering the artwork.
The same nuance should be taken into consideration for framing charcoal or pastel artworks.
In our workroom we use glass of several types: museum, antiglare mate glass, molding glass, transparent and antiglare plexiglass. In contrast to all mentioned above, antiglare mate glass is recommended to be used for framing without passepartout.
Here it is necessary to fix the glass strictly against the image, so that the picture would not look blurred, and the richness of colors would not be distorted. Glass thickness can vary from 1.2 to 2 mm.
The market specifics dictates the rule – there is nothing impossible to be accomplished. Besides framing of exquisite and expensive mirror molding, interior designers offer to decorate many other interior items and elements.
Besides framing of mirrors, aquariums, fireplaces, people have started framing their TV Plasma panels.
It looks very successful in stylish or ‘old-world’ interiors. By and by varied high-quality molding has been pushing some other finishing materials available in the market, substituting ceiling fillet, plinths, curtain-rods, playing the role of architrave, and framing doorways.
Molding studio
All works devoted to molding framing, passepartout and glass in-cutting, glass processing are made on special equipment.
The main task of frame assembly work is to reach the ideal interfacial joint at the junction of covering beads, which is practically impossible to do manually. Especially if the covering bead has complicated profile and a particular picture on it.
Many works demand original engineering solutions, relevant expertise and professional master skills. For example, when fixing of covering bead to TV Plasma panel – here the method that is usually used for framing artworks is inadmissible.
